Canadian Law Student Essay Prize

CDL Foundation is proud to manage a Canadian Law Student Essay Prize. This essay prize, awarded annually, is open to any student currently enrolled in the Faculty of Law of any university in Canada. The goal of this prize is to promote interest in civil defence litigation as a preferred field of practice and to encourage academic excellence.


One essay prize will be awarded annually, in the amount of $5,000

All qualified essays will be published electronically and distributed widely through CDL's national network.

The 2017 competition is now closed. Applications for next year will be available in early 2018. 

 

Essay Topic

The essay topic is:
A paper relevant to the multi-faceted interaction between insurance coverage and tort claims, which should include a discussion of issues arising in Insurance Law, Tort Law and/or the Civil Procedure of a Province or the Federal Court as it pertains to Tort or Insurance Litigation.

June 8, 2017 - Canadian Defence Lawyers Annual Meeting - presentation of Award. 

February 2018 - applications will be posted and competition will open.

June 2018 -  winner will be announced and presented with $5000 prize

Congratulations to Nick Hooper, recent graduate of Schulich School of Law, Dalhousie University. Nick is the winner of the 2017 Essay Prize of $5,000 for his paper: Allocating Loss at the Intersection of Insurance and Torts: Reading the Principled Developments in the Law of Subrogation.
